Matthew Medlock, bass, was born and raised in Indianapolis. He began playing the double bass at age 12 and made his solo debut at age 17 with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from high school, Medlock attended Boston University where he received his B.M. degree and Rice University where he received his M.M. degree. While at Rice University, he performed for an extended time with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Medlock is a two-year Tanglewood Music Center Fellow. He has participated in the Spoleto, Italy Festival Orchestra, the Key West Symphony and the Iris Chamber Orchestra (Michael Stern, conductor) and has been on faculty with the Eastern Music Festival.

Medlock’s teachers include Ed Barker, principal of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Timothy Pitts, principal of the Houston Symphony Orchestra; Paul Ellison, Rice University professor and former principal of the Houston Symphony Orchestra; and Greg Dugan, member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

In the summers, Medlock performs with the Southern Illinois Music Festival and is the bass teacher at Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison College in Ft. Myers. He has been a member of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra since 2001.
