Off Stage ON STAGE

Matthew Sonneborn, principal trumpet, earned a B.M. degree from the New England Conservatory. He also received fellowships to attend the Tanglewood Music Center. In addition to playing as an extra with the Boston, Baltimore and San Antonio symphony orchestras, Sonneborn has been a finalist for the Boston Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. His solo experience includes a performance at the age of 15 with the Milwaukee Symphony. Sonneborn is a member of the Naples Philharmonic Brass Quintet.

In August 2004, Sonneborn organized and participated in Brass Blast, a benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Charley. During the summers, Sonneborn is a trumpet instructor at the Hot Springs Music Festival and a performer at the Grand Teton Music Festival. He has played under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn, Simon Rattle and Leonard Slatkin.

Sonneborn recently completed a recording for trumpet-maker David G. Monette in Portland, OR. The session featured Sonneborn, Manny Laureano, principal trumpet of the Minnesota Orchestra, and David Bamonte, assistant principal trumpet of the Oregon Symphony. The three players recorded many of the most highly regarded orchestral trumpet excerpts, featuring a variety of Monette trumpets. Sonneborn has been a member of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra since 1989.

Matthew Sonneborn is underwritten by Mr. & Mrs. Albert S. McGhee for the 2009-10 season.
